About CENTENOL

CENTENOL is a research collaboration that focuses on how EEA legislation, which ties Norway to the EU's internal market, affects Norwegian law. The center addresses the challenges Norwegian lawyers face in understanding EEA law and how they can better adapt to the law's requirements.

The research at CENTENOL is interdisciplinary and looks at the impact of EEA law on free movement on Norwegian social security, immigration, and labor law. The goal is to increase awareness of the potential and actual effects of EEA law in these areas. CENTENOL will contribute to national competence building through research, teaching, and dissemination.

The center is funded for a 5-year period by the Norwegian Research Council. Interested candidates are encouraged to visit CENTENOL | University of Bergen for more information.

We can offer:

  • An excellent opportunity for exciting career development in a professionally challenging working environment at CENTENOL and the Faculty.
  • Opportunity to apply for a mobility grant to institutions abroad as part of the position.
  • PhD Fellow: Salary according to pay grade 55-59 (code 1017) based on relevant practice. This currently lies in the range between 540,500 and 575,400.
  • Postdoctoral: Salary at pay grade 72 (code 1352) according to the state salary scale upon appointment. This constitutes a gross annual salary of NOK 720 100 per year. For particularly highly qualified applicants, a higher salary may be considered.
  • Enrolment in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
  • Generous welfare benefits.

Your application must include:

  • A cover letter (filled out in the application portal). The letter should provide a brief account of the applicant's research interests and motivation for applying for the position and how this agenda fits with the aims of CENTENOL and the work package on labor law.
  • Project description on 3-4 pages (font size 11, single line spacing). The description should include a description of the Ph.D./postdoc project's overall theme, goals, theory, and method, and a plan for the implementation of the project. The project must be academically related to CENTENOL and the work package on labor law.
  • Full version of the master's thesis (for applicants to the PhD position) or doctoral thesis (for applicants to the postdoc position) and up to 3 other academic publications in pdf format. The publications must be in English or a Scandinavian language unless otherwise agreed. The applicant may choose to include unpublished manuscripts.

  • CV (using the template in the application portal)
  • Complete list of scientific work (publication list)
  • The names and contact information of two referees. One of these should preferably be the main supervisor of the Doctoral thesis/master thesis.

Applicants whose education is from another country than Norway need to attach a certified translation of the diploma and transcript of grades to English or a Scandinavian language if the original is not in any of these languages. They are also advised to attach an explanation of their university's grading system and an approval that the education corresponds to a Norwegian master or doctoral degree. Applicants must also attach NOKUT's general approval that the education corresponds to a Norwegian master's degree.

The application can be written in English, Norwegian, or another Scandinavian language. The application and appendices must be sent electronically via the link «Apply for position» on this page.

The application must be complete by the application deadline of October 1, 2024. Applications that do not include all mandatory attachments will not be considered.

General information:

The assessment will emphasize the quality of the project description, its relevance and importance towards the Centre and work package on labor law, as well as the applicant's academic and personal prerequisites for carrying out the project and contributing to the research community at the Faculty.

It is preferable to recruit a postdoctoral fellow for the project, and applicants for the position of postdoctoral fellow will therefore be prioritized. Relevant applicants will be called in for an interview.

Further information about the employment process at the University of Bergen can be found here.

The state labor force shall reflect the diversity of Norwegian society to the greatest extent possible. People with immigrant backgrounds and people with disabilities are encouraged to apply for the position.

The University of Bergen applies the principle of public access to information when recruiting staff for academic positions.

Information about applicants may be made public even if the applicant has asked not to be named on the list of persons who have applied. The applicant must be notified if the request to be omitted is not met.

The successful applicant must comply with the guidelines that apply to the position at all times.

If a PhD fellow is hired it is a requirement that the candidate within the first three months of employment submits a detailed project description that provides the basis for admission to the faculty's research training.
