Offer Description

UiB - Knowledge that shapes society

Through robust and close interaction with the world around us – globally, nationally and locally – we shall be instrumental in building a society based on knowledge, skills and attitudes.

The Department of Design, Faculty of Fine Art, Music and Design has a vacancy for a permanent position as an Associate Professor (50%). Start date upon agreement.

Work tasks/research field:

We are seeking an Associate Professor for teaching and research in colour within our fields of visual communication and furniture design/interior architecture. The ideal candidate is an excellent communicator with strong knowledge and skills in both analogue and digital tools.

The candidate should be an active practitioner in design, architecture, or the arts and be able to contribute to the development of the colour field through a combination of theoretical and practical approaches.

Our new Associate Professor should have practical experience with colour as a design/artistic medium, including colour and light theory, colour systems, technical material knowledge about colourants (such as pigments, binders, etc.), and the psychological and cultural aspects of colour use.

It is desirable that the candidate can contribute to developing and strengthening the relevance and position of colour in our study programs and in the artistic research at the department.

  1. Teaching and supervision, including examination.
  2. Shared responsibility for learning resources in accordance with study programs.
  3. Artistic research, including project development/management and active participation in research groups.
  4. Presentation/Dissemination of results.
  5. Supervision of BA, MA, and Ph.D. students.
  6. Recruitment of BA, MA, and Ph.D. students, including admission work may be relevant.
  7. Organization and facilitation of these tasks.
  8. Administrative tasks and other management duties, including committee work may be relevant.
Qualifications and personal qualities:

The position as Associate Professor requires completion of an approved artistic research doctoral program in the relevant field or documented evidence of high international-level artistic activities or artistic research, with specialization which is relevant to the academic field or discipline.

Basic teaching training and experience with the supervision of students at university level is a requirement for the position as Associate Professor. This implies completed formal pedagogical training, as well as basic skills in planning, implementation, evaluation, and development of teaching and supervision. Relevant courses in combination with actual teaching experience could replace a university pedagogy program. Should the successful applicant not have such competence at the time of appointment, he/she will be required to document such training within two years of the date of appointment.

The University of Bergen emphasizes educational qualifications for appointment to scientific positions.

Pedagogical training must be documented in a pedagogical portfolio which should include a documented overview of practical experience and competence as well as a brief reflection statement. The statement should primarily describe the applicant's own teaching philosophy and an evaluation of own teaching in relation to his/her knowledge of students' learning at a higher education level.

The applicants' academic competence will be assessed by an expert committee. The most highly qualified applicants will be called in for interview and trial lecture by an internal interview team.

In addition, emphasis will be placed on:

  1. A developed practice within the field.
  2. Experience in teaching at university level.
  3. Organizational skills and experience.
  4. Personal and interpersonal qualities.
  5. Strong collaboration skills, emphasizing dialogue and inclusive academic communication.
  6. Ability to work independently and structured, be responsible, flexible, and accommodating.

The language of instruction is primarily Norwegian. It is required that the person appointed has proficiency in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language at level B2 within three years of employment. UiB offers Norwegian language courses and will facilitate meeting the language requirement.

The workplace for the position is on campus in Bergen, and regular presence is expected.

We can offer:

  1. A good and professionally challenging working environment.
  2. Position as Associate Professor (code 1011) with an annual salary of NOK 742,000 – 782,000 gross per year in a 100% position. A 2% pension contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund is deducted. For particularly qualified applicants, a higher salary may be considered.
  3. Enrolment in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
  4. Material documenting artistic research and artistic practice.
  5. The applicant must explain their qualifications related to the requirements and emphasis of the position, including a description of intentions and goals for the fixed-term period.

Please note: Applications will be assessed based on the information available in JobbNorge when the application deadline expires. If the original documents are not in English or a Scandinavian language, certified translations must be provided in one of these languages.

The applicant is responsible for ensuring that all information is uploaded before the deadline.
