Postdoctoral Research Associate in Experimental Particle Physics
3 months ago
Project Overview:
The research initiative is associated with the ATLAS experiment at CERN, conducted within the ATLAS team at the Department. The team is currently engaged in investigations for supersymmetry and other indicators of Dark Matter, alongside analyses of the CP characteristics of the Higgs boson. The focus is on final states that include multiple tau-leptons. Additionally, the team participates in the ATLAS upgrade, specifically in the ITk-Pixels project, with responsibilities related to the testing and delivery of pixel modules for the ITk.
Role Expectations:
The chosen candidate will be involved in the physics analysis of ATLAS data, including searches for the Higgs boson in decays to two tau-leptons and a photon, as well as studying the Higgs decaying to a Z-boson and a photon, a decay mode sensitive to the CP properties of the Higgs. To enhance signal selection, it is anticipated that selection methods utilizing Machine Learning algorithms will be integral. The candidate will also contribute to the ITk project, particularly in the testing and quality assurance of silicon pixel modules.
Qualifications and Skills:
- Applicants must possess a master's degree or equivalent qualifications in subatomic physics or must have submitted their master's thesis for evaluation prior to the application deadline. It is a prerequisite that the master's degree is awarded for employment.
- Experience or expertise in subatomic physics is essential.
- Familiarity with one of the major experiments at the LHC or a comparable facility is advantageous.
- Applicants should demonstrate the ability to work independently and in an organized manner, showcasing strong collaborative skills.
- Proficiency in both written and spoken English is required.
- A good command of the Norwegian language is considered a plus.
Personal attributes and interpersonal skills will be prioritized. Aspirations and potential will also be significant factors in the evaluation of candidates.
Position Specifics:
The University of Bergen adheres to regulations concerning export control systems, which will be applied during the application process.
About the PhD Position:
The fellowship is for a duration of 3 years, with the possibility of extending to a 4th year, which includes 25% mandatory work (e.g., teaching responsibilities at the department) distributed throughout the employment period. The extension to the 4th year is contingent upon the candidate's qualifications and the department's teaching needs, as determined by the head of the department upon appointment.
The employment duration may be shortened if the candidate has previously held a qualifying position (e.g., research fellow, research assistant).
Research Training Requirements:
As a PhD Research Fellow, participation in an approved educational program for a PhD degree within a 3-year timeframe is mandatory. The deadline for applying for admission to the PhD program at The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences is two months after the commencement of the position or the start of the research project leading to the PhD degree. It is a condition that the candidate meets the enrollment requirements for the PhD program at the University of Bergen.
What We Offer:
- A supportive and professionally enriching work environment.
- Salary as a PhD research fellow (code 1017) in the state salary scale, corresponding to a gross annual salary equivalent to pay grade 55. Salary increases are based on tenure in the position.
- Enrollment in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
- Comprehensive welfare benefits.
Application Requirements:
- A brief overview of the applicant's research interests and motivation for applying.
- Contact information for two referees, one of whom should be the main advisor for the master's thesis or equivalent.
- Curriculum Vitae.
- Transcripts and diplomas confirming the completion of bachelor's and master's degrees. If the master's degree is not yet completed, a statement from the institution confirming submission of the master's thesis is required.
- Relevant certificates and references.
- Documentation of English proficiency (if applicable, in accordance with PhD admission language requirements).
- A list of any scientific publications.
All application materials must be submitted with certified translations into English or a Scandinavian language.
