Trondheim, Trøndelag, Norway Norwegian University of Science and Technology Full time

Position Overview

The postdoctoral fellowship is a temporary role aimed at enhancing qualifications for senior academic positions.

The Mathematics Education Section within the Department of Teacher Education is seeking a candidate for a Postdoc role in Mathematics Education, concentrating on Critical Mathematics Education. This position is part of the Research Group focused on Inclusive Mathematics Education and Democracy. The fellowship aims to investigate the critical role of mathematics across various societal dimensions, particularly within educational settings.

Critical Mathematics Education (CME) emphasizes the necessity of preparing learners to become responsible and informed citizens who can engage with mathematics in a productive and critical manner. This involves aligning critical perspectives on mathematically framed realities with responsible citizenship. The fellowship will specifically explore how to adopt a critical viewpoint on issues related to climate change and its mitigation through education for sustainable development (ESD). ESD will be approached through dialogical engagement with critical discussions surrounding climate change in mathematics classrooms. The role will also involve identifying how mathematics educators can support students in critically analyzing the mathematics related to climate change.

Additionally, the postdoctoral position will contribute to strengthening the Sustainability Lab initiative for schools by employing innovative transdisciplinary methods to address sustainability from a socio-ecological viewpoint within educational contexts.

Key Responsibilities

This postdoctoral role offers a unique opportunity to gain extensive experience and collaborate with international researchers.

Essential Qualifications

  • A completed doctoral degree from Norway or an equivalent foreign degree recognized as comparable to a Norwegian PhD in Mathematics Education or Educational Sciences.
  • Demonstrated background and research experience in education for sustainability, supported by relevant publications or professional work.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English.
  • Applicants who have submitted their PhD thesis may be considered, even if they have not yet defended their dissertation. Proof of the obtained doctoral degree must be provided prior to commencing the position.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Priority will be given to candidates with a PhD in Mathematics Education, particularly those with a strong interest in education for sustainable development from a Critical Mathematics Education perspective. Candidates with a PhD in environmental education, focusing on education for sustainable development, along with a master's degree in mathematics education, will also be prioritized.
  • Applicants should demonstrate a solid understanding of mathematics education literature and theories, especially Critical Mathematics Education, as evidenced in their research proposal.
  • Knowledge of Norwegian or another Scandinavian language is advantageous.

Personal Attributes

We are looking for a motivated individual capable of engaging in both theoretical and empirical research, innovating various approaches for the dialogical involvement of multiple stakeholders in promoting education for sustainability within school and teacher education settings. The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Independence, proactivity, a solution-oriented mindset, and accountability for their actions.
  • The ability to work effectively in teams or research groups and a willingness to actively enhance the profile of our Research Group.
  • Familiarity with Norwegian or another Scandinavian language is preferred due to the nature of the research and teaching responsibilities.
  • A strong desire to collaborate with various stakeholders involved in our Sustainability Lab for schools to address sustainability challenges from a transdisciplinary perspective.
  • A commitment to supporting efforts to secure external funding, including EU projects and initiatives funded by the Norwegian Research Council.

What We Offer

  • Engaging and stimulating tasks within a robust international academic environment.
  • A collaborative and supportive team of dedicated colleagues.
  • Attractive employment conditions.
