About The Unit
The insurance department is part of the Finance, Treasury & Insurance Department at Yara's headquarters in Oslo. The function currently has five full-time employees (including the advertised position).
The insurance department has a global mandate to place all insurance lines, manage policies and insurance-related matters, and handle claims. The department operates across all regions where Yara has operations. The function ensures Yara has appropriate cover in line with its corporate insurance strategy, contractual obligations, and regulations.
We are seeking an insurance manager with a minimum of five years' experience in insurance and claims management, mainly from the shipping or marine insurance sector. The successful candidate will be Yara's leading expert in this insurance domain and will serve as the primary contact for operations involving the transport and sale of fertilizers and raw materials. The role involves proposing and driving changes in insurance programs, work, and handling processes, and the strategic framework for insurance in an ever-evolving risk landscape. The position has a broad exposure towards internal and external stakeholders.
The insurance manager will be involved in the following insurance lines:
- Cargo insurance for the transport of raw materials and fertilizer on land and at sea
- Marine insurance, including Hull and Machinery, Loss of Hire, Protection and Indemnity for our LPG fleet and Yara Birkeland
- Charterers' Liability insurance for the chartered vessel
The insurances are placed with the help of insurance brokers.
Responsibilities
- Prepare and renew insurance programs, reviewing statistics and underwriting data, and negotiating terms and conditions. Conduct strategic evaluations of insurance programs based on the corporate insurance strategy.
- Manage insurance claims and recovery actions connected to the insurance claims from first notification to the final settlement/resolution, and follow up arbitration and court proceedings in different jurisdictions through cooperation with external lawyers and insurers. Review claim adjustments to assure these are in line with policy terms and ensure that payment of compensation is effected in a timely manner.
- Review of commercial contracts with a focus on insurance exposure. Provide insurance advice to internal stakeholders for cargo and marine related matters
- Perform in-house insurance competence building through seminars and continuous knowledge sharing.
- As required, act as a cross-functional claims resource in the insurance department.
Profile
- A diploma in law or maritime law is preferred, but candidates with other types of higher education with relevant work experience are also encouraged to apply.
- Proven relevant experience from shipping, a law firm, or the insurance sector.
- Deep understanding of bulk trade, chartering, maritime contracts, Incoterms.
- Experience in claims handling and dispute management, from minor damages to major casualties.
- Experience in drafting and negotiating insurance policy terms and conditions.
- Professional understanding of different types of liability arising from cross-border transportation and the applicable legal regimes.
- Strong communication and negotiation skills.
- Good analysis capacity with high ethical standards in line with Yara's values.
- Solution-oriented and trustworthy professional with a thorough understanding of the business environment and the shipping and logistics industry.
- Highly organized and structured with an eye for detail.
- Team player with ability to work independently and take ownership of areas of responsibility, focusing on continuous improvement.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills, and able to liaise and communicate effectively with internal and external partners, maintaining cross-cultural awareness.
- Ability to build strong working relationships across business areas and locations within Yara.
- Proficient in English. Additional relevant language skills are an advantage.
