The Nurse is responsible for providing high quality nursing care to all guests and crewmembers onboard. This role supports the Staff Captain, Senior Doctor, Doctor, and Chief Nurse in all shipboard health-related matters, including outbreak prevention, illness reporting, and compliance with international, national, and company medical standards.

Main Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Understand and adhere to the Safety and Quality Management System (SQM) and follow all relevant policies and procedures.
  • Provide administrative support to the Doctor and Senior Doctor, including completing medical forms and reports.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of all medical information.
  • Deliver First Aid training to crew members as directed and ensure the Medical Center and Secondary Medical Space remain clean, orderly, and properly operated.
  • Assist the Doctor in all clinical duties and responsibilities.
  • Provide nursing care during both minor and major emergency situations for guests and crew.
  • Perform patient triage; immediately notify the Doctor of any life-threatening findings or abnormal vital signs.
  • Support patient care and manage various administrative tasks related to guest/crew medical needs and the operation of the Medical Facility and pharmacy.
  • Become fully familiar with shipboard medical policies and procedures; participate in the daily medical on-call schedule and assist the Doctor on duty.
  • Respond to any potentially serious medical concern outside clinic hours by conducting an in-person assessment, followed by proper documentation in the medical record.
  • Participate in all lifeboat and emergency drills unless excused by the Staff Captain.
  • Assist in maintaining appropriate inventory levels of pharmaceuticals and medical supplies.
  • Report any significant inventory discrepancies to Risk Management and the Director of Medical Operations.
  • Follow company policies for inspecting diagnostic and life-support equipment to ensure proper function.
  • Remove expired medications and dispose of them according to environmental policies or return them to the vendor when applicable.
  • Test water samples using approved Public Health methods and maintain a log of results; immediately report any positive findings to the Doctor and Staff Captain.
  • Answer Medical Facility phone calls politely and professionally; coordinate shoreside medical referrals through the Crew Medical Department and notify relevant department heads.
  • Maintain current medical records for all crewmembers.
  • Schedule routine medical examinations for crew enrolled in wellness programs.

Education & Qualifications:

  • Diploma or degree from an accredited nursing school or university.
  • Valid nursing license from the country or state/province of origin.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of recent experience in Emergency Room, ICU, Cardiac Critical Care, or Trauma Unit.
  • Valid Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification, renewed every two years.
  • Must provide a complete chronology of all professional medical activities since graduation.

Language Requirements:

  • Intermediate to advanced proficiency in spoken and written English.

Physical Requirements:

  • Able to stand, walk long distances, climb stairs, bend, and lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Must have full vision abilities including close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and focus adjustment.
  • Physically able to participate in emergency procedures and lifesaving drills.
  • Must have full use of arms, legs, hearing, and speech to carry out safety tasks, including lowering lifeboats.
  • Must always be available to assist the Doctor or Senior Doctor with medical cases.
  • Must carry a two-way communication device or mobile phone while on duty for emergency response.
  • Able to work in a multicultural environment and adapt to schedule changes, assignments, and deadlines.
  • Able to work in varying temperature conditions, both indoors and outdoors.
  • Must be able to pass basic safety training.
