PhD Research Fellowship in the Study of Religion at the Department of Archaeology, History, Cultural Studies and Religion.

The PhD position is earmarked for a project on strong individual commitment in early Christian apocryphal literature and martyrdom accounts from the 2nd and 4th centuries CE.

This position is part of the RADHEART project. The PhD candidates will be part of a closely collaborating research group focused on individual commitment in radical ancient religion, as well as a large and dynamic research environment at the department.

About the RADHEART Project

RADHEART: Radical Habits of the Heart: Emotions, Embodiment, and Strong, Individual Commitment in Ancient Religions, an ERC Consolidator Grant led by Laura Feldt.

The project focuses on the role of emotions and embodiment in strong, individual commitment in the ancient world.

About the PhD Position and Research Training

The main purpose of the PhD position is to complete a doctoral degree, qualifying for independent research and other employment forms. The duration of the PhD position is four years, with two and a half years dedicated to the research project and one year to career-promoting work.

As a PhD candidate, you must participate in the Faculty of Humanities' PhD programme, which includes a training component corresponding to 30 ECTS.

Qualifications and Personal Qualities
  • The applicant must hold a Norwegian master's degree or an equivalent foreign degree in the Study of Religion, religious studies, history of religion, or a closely related discipline.
  • The applicant must be able to work independently and have strong cooperation skills.
  • The applicant must be proficient in both written and oral English.
  • The applicant must be able to work with original language sources, mainly Latin and, if relevant, Greek.

The applicant must have completed supervised independent research work, typically a master's thesis of at least 30 ECTS credits, with a minimum grade of B or equivalent.

Applicants must submit a proposal for a research project aligned with the RADHEART project, including a progress plan.

In assessing applications, the academic quality and feasibility of the proposed PhD project and the applicant's qualifications will be considered.
