Are you a skilled Senior or Lead Data Engineer eager to shape the future of IoT technology while contributing to a greener, more reliable railway industry? If you're passionate about designing cutting-edge data infrastructure and playing a key role in technical decision-making, this might be the perfect role for you
About the Role
The company is seeking a Senior Data Engineer to build a scalable, robust data platform and develop APIs that expose pipelines, models, and insights to other systems. Their IoT-powered product is already in use across three continents, but as they scale from a 19-person startup to a global SaaS company, your expertise will be critical in enhancing their data-driven platform and fulfilling their vision of smarter railway systems.
In this role, you'll collaborate with a small, cross-functional team to deliver innovative solutions and ensure an exceptional user experience. If working with data excites you and you're motivated to impact the future of railway tech, this could be your next opportunity.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and maintain scalable data pipelines for high-volume IoT data ingestion using streaming platforms.
- Partner with the data science team to support real-time data processing and AI/ML workflows on platforms like Databricks.
- Optimize time-series databases, such as TimescaleDB, for terabyte-scale datasets.
- Ensure seamless integration of IoT telemetry with the data platform.
- Manage cloud infrastructure on Azure using Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools like Terraform, and deploy solutions with Docker.
- Monitor and optimize pipelines for performance, scalability, and cost-efficiency.
- Implement data governance, quality checks, and system monitoring technologies.
- Document systems and processes while communicating effectively with cross-functional teams.
Requirements
The ideal candidate will have a strong technical background, proactive problem-solving skills, and experience creating scalable, data-centric solutions. Key qualifications include:
- 5+ years of experience in data engineering, with a focus on high-volume data pipelines and real-time processing.
- Proficiency with event streaming platforms for large-scale data ingestion.
- Expertise in handling terabyte-scale datasets using time-series databases (e.g., TimescaleDB).
- Hands-on experience with Python, including writing production-level code for data processing and AI/ML model deployment (e.g., MLflow, Airflow, PySpark, Polars).
- Experience building APIs to expose data pipelines, models, and insights (e.g., FastAPI).
- Strong knowledge of cloud infrastructure services, IaC tools like Terraform, and containerization with Docker.
- Excellent communication and documentation skills for effective collaboration.
