Digital Editor and Data Manager at The Virtual Ibsen Centre

Digital Humanities Project Assistant

The Centre for Ibsen Studies, Department of Linguistics and Scandinavian Studies at the University of Oslo, is announcing 1–2 positions as Digital Humanities Project Assistant in up to a 100% position. The engagement is for a period of 6 months, with the possibility of an extension, and the start date is as soon as possible.

The position is linked to work on the digital resources at the Centre for Ibsen Studies, particularly the digital scholarly edition of Henrik Ibsen's Writings (HISe). We are looking for a team member who can contribute to the further development and standardization of the XML encoding in the edition, as well as test various publishing solutions. The person hired will be employed under the job title Department Engineer (SKO 1085). You will work closely with the digital editor and other staff at the centre, as well as collaborate with the technical operations unit at the Faculty of Humanities, Humit.

The position offers a unique opportunity to gain experience with digital editions, cultural datasets, and digital humanities, in addition to gaining detailed insight into Norway's largest digital humanities project to date.

The primary responsibilities will involve re-encoding a large text corpus in TEI XML, using both automated and manual methods. This work includes developing scripts and regular expressions to streamline the encoding process, as well as ensuring quality through proofreading and code testing. Additionally, you will contribute to evaluating technical solutions for future publication and assist in creating guidelines and documentation in collaboration with the centre's staff.

Qualifications

  • Generally strong IT skills and the ability to work with digital tools
  • Good written and oral communication skills in a Scandinavian language and/or English
  • A strong interest in the position's tasks

Desired Qualifications

It is an advantage if you have experience with:

  • Digital humanities projects or digital editions
  • Automation of text processing and encoding
  • Scripting for text processing (e.g., Python, XSLT, or RegEx)

  • Has an interest in digital cultural heritage
  • Works in a structured, independent, and goal-oriented manner
  • Has analytical skills and the ability to identify solutions
  • Is precise and has a careful and methodical approach to work
  • Enjoys collaboration and interdisciplinary teamwork

Personal suitability will be an important consideration in the selection process.

Application Process

Applications will be evaluated based on the qualifications listed above. Interviews and reference checks will be conducted as part of the recruitment process.

The hired candidate must be proficient in either a Scandinavian language or English as a working language.

We offer

  • A salary from NOK 477,705 to 526,770 per year, depending on qualifications.
  • Participation in an exciting teaching and research environment.
