Role Overview
We are engaged in the development, ownership, and operation of renewable energy production facilities, and we also participate in the trading and origination of energy, gas, and renewable certificates from both our projects and those of third parties.
The Weather Trading team at Statkraft formulates and implements a suite of quantitative trading strategies rooted in meteorological and energy market models. To achieve this, we rely on a collaborative effort among highly skilled meteorologists, strategists, and data scientists to generate unique insights. Our team extensively utilizes weather and energy market data.
As a (Senior) Meteorological Strategist, your responsibilities will include:
- Enhancing and refining weather forecasts for our portfolios across Europe, utilizing a diverse array of numerical weather predictions and statistical models.
- Supporting daily trading decisions by analyzing the latest weather forecasts and conducting analogue assessments based on historical weather data.
- Integrating applied research into weather forecasting and atmospheric predictability, while visualizing and communicating weather variations across different spatial and temporal scales using various weather forecast products.
- Developing statistical arbitrage strategies for energy and gas markets informed by insights into mid-range weather trends.
Candidate Qualifications
We are seeking a Meteorologist with a degree or relevant experience in Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) models and:
- Proficiency in managing extensive weather datasets from various formats.
- Experience with ensemble forecast verification and an understanding of the strengths and limitations of ensemble predictions.
- Familiarity with ECMWF forecasts and other predictions of atmospheric variability, spanning from sub-seasonal to seasonal ensemble forecast data.
- A strong interest in short-term energy markets, renewable energy, algorithms, and data science.
- A commitment to contributing to the energy transition and working for Europe’s largest renewable energy producer.
- Experience and willingness to interpret and present weather forecasts, along with strong presentation skills.
- A highly analytical, data-driven mindset with advanced statistical and machine learning capabilities.
- Modelling and programming experience, preferably in Python.
- A collaborative and dependable nature, excellent communication skills, and a team-oriented approach.
- A strong commercial acumen, an interest in energy trading, and a high level of initiative and self-motivation.
