PhD Research Fellow in Geodynamics and Surface Processes

The University of Bergen is seeking a highly motivated PhD Research Fellow to join our team in the Department of Earth Science. The successful candidate will be part of a research project focused on the 3D evolution of foreland fold-and-thrust belts, with a specific emphasis on the southern Andes.
Research ObjectivesThe main aim of this project is to understand how pre-existing structures, distribution of decollement horizons, and climate-driven changes in sediment input control the 3D evolving structure of foreland fold-and-thrust belts. The project will involve the creation of a 3D structural and stratigraphic framework for selected cross-sections along the Andean foreland, as well as the development of high-resolution coupled 3D forward tectonic surface process models.
MethodologyThe project will be carried out in collaboration with the University of Barcelona and Total, with the bulk of the work taking place at the University of Bergen. The successful candidate will be expected to work independently and as part of a team, with a strong emphasis on collaborative skills and communication.
Requirements- Master's degree in Tectonics/Geodynamics/Geophysics or equivalent education
- Background and research interest in quantitative earth science
- Training in numerical model use and development or quantitative approach to geological data handling
- Documented basic programming skills in Python, Matlab, or another programming language
- Experience with geodynamic modeling and landscape evolution modeling is an advantage
