Decarbonization and Maritime Sustainability Research Opportunities

The maritime industry is undergoing significant transformations in its quest to achieve net zero emissions. Cleaner fuels, alternative propulsion methods, and enhanced efficiency offer cost-saving opportunities. The European Union and International Maritime Organization set ambitious goals and expectations for shipping companies. Navigating and complying with regulations is challenging.

DNV stands as an independent partner to ship owners and regulators, providing guidance and insights. To address critical topics in maritime sustainability, we offer projects in the Research department:

Project FEUM: Exploring Shipowners' Challenges with Maritime Regulations

Assess the impact of regulations on ship owners and identify opportunities for improvement.

Project CCS: Assessment of Carbon Capture and Storage Solutions for Green Corridors

Evaluate the feasibility of carbon capture and storage solutions for green corridors.

Project LCA: Environmental Impacts of Antifouling and Plastics

Analyze the environmental impacts of antifouling and plastics in the maritime industry.

We seek enthusiastic and creative summer students to join our team and contribute to projects focused on decarbonization and maritime sustainability. As a selected candidate, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Explore hot topics in maritime research, including fuel EU maritime and EU MRV, on-board carbon capture, green corridors, biofouling, and marine pollution.
  • Play for the 'Red Team' and identify technical vulnerabilities in novel technologies.
  • Wear a captain's hat and understand regulatory challenges from the perspective of ship owners.
  • Assess environmental impacts and evaluate the effects of shipping on biodiversity and marine life.
  • Collaborate with experts and work with internal and external industry experts and stakeholders to gain insights and validate findings.
  • Engage in social activities and join the vibrant community of summer students at Høvik.

This role offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the maritime industry, develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and contribute to projects with real-world impact.

As a summer student at DNV, you will have access to valuable and real-life experience, the opportunity to work with world-class experts, and the chance to be part of a large group of summer students with different backgrounds and universities. You will also have the opportunity to build a professional network for the future and enjoy a great work-life balance.

DNV is an Equal Opportunity Employer and gives consideration for employment to qualified applicants without regard to gender, religion, race, national or ethnic origin, cultural background, social group, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, marital status, age, or political opinion. Diversity is fundamental to our culture, and we invite you to be part of this diversity.

We are seeking candidates enrolled in the 3rd or 4th year of a relevant master's program, with the following skills:

  • Relevant degree enrollment in maritime studies, environmental science, chemical engineering, process technology, or industrial ecology.
  • Passion for sustainability, transparency, and environmental regulations.
  • Thinking outside the box and ability to think creatively and critically.
  • Strong analytical and research abilities, with the capacity to synthesize complex information.
  • Technical competence in data collection, transmission, and analytics, lifecycle assessment (LCA), marine biology, thermodynamics, gas measurements, and quantification.
  • Interest in cybersecurity, including protocol testing, vulnerability assessment, penetration testing, and compliance auditing.
  • Proactive and collaborative attitude, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Future project consideration, viewing this summer project as a potential precursor to a master's project.

Managers will select summer students based on business needs aligned with your education, experience, and background. Please indicate your master's program specialization and/or main area of study during the application process.

Please upload your application letter, CV, and grade certificate in our application tracking system (Oracle). All documents should be in English, if possible. Students without this information will not be considered.

The summer projects are hosted jointly by several teams in Group Research and Development, including Maritime, Food and Ocean Systems, and Energy systems programmes.
