PhD Position: Defining Advanced Control Strategies for Non-Residential Buildings
About the Job: Buildings are energy-efficient assets that can optimize their energy usage by shifting loads in time to provide services to electricity or district heating grids. This concept is known as demand response. One key objective is to reduce energy consumption during peak hours while maintaining occupant comfort. In cold climates, space heating is a dominant load that can be adapted using advanced control strategies. Model Predictive Control (MPC) has gained significant interest for performing this control. However, there are limited examples of MPC being deployed and tested in real buildings over extended periods.
Why This PhD? This project aims to define an MPC setup that addresses limitations such as limited measurement data, non-standardized data structures, and complex physical phenomena. The goal is to provide thorough documentation of the test case in a real non-residential building. The PhD thesis is part of a centre focused on networking and collaboration between academia and industry to accelerate projects and transition towards a carbon-neutral built environment by 2050.
Duties and Responsibilities: The successful candidate will define and develop an MPC setup suited for typical waterborne heating systems in non-residential buildings. They will test the MPC in a real building located in Trondheim and monitor its performance. Detailed documentation of the MPC setup's performance and lessons learned will also be required.
Required Skills and Qualifications: A professionally relevant background in control, building, or HVAC engineering is essential. A strong academic background, with an average grade equal to B or better compared to NTNU's grading scale, is also required. Master's students can apply, but the master's degree must be obtained and documented. Meeting the requirements for admission to the faculty's doctoral program is mandatory.
Preferred Selection Criteria: Previous experience and strong interest in control and data-driven modeling are highly desirable. Knowledge or previous experience with building automation, excellent programming skills, and previous experience in scientific writing are also valuable. Good written and oral English skills are necessary, with knowledge of the Norwegian language considered an advantage.
Personal Characteristics: The successful candidate should be able to work in a team, follow common instructions, and take initiative. Creative, pragmatic, and solution-oriented individuals with good written and oral communication skills are encouraged to apply.
We Offer: Exciting tasks in a strong international academic environment, an open and collaborative work culture, and favourable terms in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
Salary and Conditions: As a PhD candidate, you will receive a gross salary of NOK 532,200 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. The period of employment is 3 years. Appointment to a PhD position requires admission to the PhD programme in Engineering within three months of employment and participation in an organized PhD programme during the employment period.
