For a position as a PhD Candidate, the goal is a completed doctoral education up to an obtained doctoral degree.

The International Disability Research in Education and Teacher Training (IDRETT) research group has a vacancy for a 3-year PhD position in the Department of Teacher Education within the physical education and sport group. 

The successful applicant will engage in a research project examining the disability experience of students and recently graduated adults from Norwegian schools with an emphasis on understanding the disability experiences in physical education and sport contexts. A largely qualitative inquiry and exploration, the project may utilize diverse methodology to accomplish this goal. In concert with the data gathered and research published, this project will require the PhD student to consider the dissemination of material in order to reach teachers, connect the findings to the Norwegian curriculum, and collaborate with research group members to create opportunities for in-service workshops and learning opportunities in an effort to better the school environment that we’ve examined.

Duties of the position

Designing and implementing a research project within the parameters set by the position  Scientific communication/research dissemination Participation in professional organisations and/or conferences Write and defend a PhD thesis Be an active participant in the research group, department and the research environment at the institute

Required selection criteria

You must have a professionally relevant background in physical education. Your education must correspond to a five-year Norwegian degree program, where 120 credits are obtained at master's level. You must have a strong academic background from your previous studies and an average grade from the master's degree program, or equivalent education, which is equal to B or better compared with NTNU's grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic basis. If you have a weaker grade background, you may be assessed if you can document that you are particularly suitable for a PhD education (e.g. research publications, scientific conference participation etc.). Master's students who have submitted their master thesis can apply, and will be assessed, but the master's degree must be obtained and documented before starting the position.  You must meet the requirements for admission to the faculty's doctoral program. Oral and written communication skills in English.

Preferred selection criteria

Demonstrated ability to write and publish international scientific articles based upon carried out research tasks will be seen as an advantage. Documented training in adapted physical education, adapted physical activity, special education, disability sport, or another related field is considered advantageous. Oral and written communication skills in Norwegian and/or experience working in a Norwegian educational context.

Salary and conditions

As a PhD candidate (code 1017) you are normally paid from gross NOK 532 200 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.


The period of employment is 3 years

Appointment to a PhD position requires that you are admitted to the (Specialization Teaching Profession and School Research) within three months of employment, and that you participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period.
