Position: Research Scientist in the Department of Biomedicine

Institution: University of Bergen - Advancing Knowledge for Society

At the Faculty of Medicine, within the Department of Biomedicine, we are offering a full-time permanent role for a research scientist. This position is externally funded and is part of a significant project focusing on 'Mitochondrial Transfer in Malignant Brain Tumors'. The project is financed for a duration of three years.

About the Department and Project:

Our research team is dedicated to exploring the mechanisms behind invasion and resistance to therapy in human glioblastoma, which is recognized as the most common and aggressive primary brain tumor. Our investigations utilize both cell culture and animal models. A key aspect of this project involves studying microtubes, which serve as vital communication pathways between tumor cells and between tumor and stromal cells. We aim to uncover new mechanisms of microtube and nanotube formation and analyze the potential for mitochondrial transfer between tumor cells and stromal cells via these microtubes. For more details, please refer to our website. Our research group collaborates closely with a laboratory in Bordeaux, France.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design, plan, and execute in vitro and in vivo experiments related to the project.
  • Contribute to the writing of research publications and grant proposals.
  • Engage in the supervision of PhD and master's students.

Qualifications and Personal Attributes:

  • A relevant Norwegian PhD or an equivalent doctoral degree is required.
  • A strong background in cell biology, particularly in cancer research or brain cancer research, is essential.
  • Experience with animal work (FELASA C or equivalent), including surgical procedures, is necessary.
  • A solid publication record, including recent first-author publications, demonstrating active research involvement is expected.
  • Experience with mammalian cell culture, flow cytometry, confocal microscopy, western blotting, CRISPR/Cas9, and lentiviral vectors is highly desirable.
  • Proficiency in mentoring, teaching, and manuscript writing, with experience in grant applications being an advantage.
  • Motivation, responsibility, and a strong work ethic, along with enthusiasm for research, are crucial.
  • Personal skills such as the ability to work independently and collaboratively within a research team will be assessed.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English is mandatory.
  • Experience in international collaborations is a plus.

We Offer:

  • A stimulating and challenging research environment at the forefront of brain cancer research.
  • Competitive salary in accordance with pay grade 64 NOK code 1109/salary scale 24.8, with potential for higher remuneration for exceptionally qualified candidates.
  • Enrollment in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
  • Comprehensive welfare benefits.
