Bergen, Vestland, Norway University of Bergen Full time
About the Project

The University of Bergen is seeking a PhD Research Fellow to contribute to the ATLAS experiment at CERN. This project involves research work within the ATLAS group at the Department, focusing on searches for supersymmetry and other signatures of Dark Matter, as well as studies of the CP properties of the Higgs boson. The group's research primarily involves final states containing several tau-leptons.

The selected candidate will be responsible for participating in physics analysis of ATLAS data, including searching for the Higgs boson in decays to two tau-leptons and a photon, or studying the Higgs decaying to a Z-boson and a photon. Machine Learning algorithms will play a crucial role in optimising signal selection. Additionally, the candidate will take part in the ITk project, focusing on testing and quality assurance of silicon pixel modules.

Qualifications and Personal Qualities

  • Applicants must hold a master's degree or equivalent education in subatomic physics or have submitted their master's thesis for assessment prior to the application deadline. A master's degree is a condition of employment.
  • Experience or competence from subatomic physics is required.
  • Experience from one of the large experiments at the LHC or a similar facility is an advantage.
  • Applicants must be able to work independently and in a structured manner, demonstrating good collaborative skills.
  • Applicants must be proficient in both written and oral English.
  • Good command of the Norwegian language is an advantage.

About the PhD Position

The fellowship will be for a period of 3 years, with the possibility of a 4th year consisting of 25% compulsory work, such as teaching responsibilities at the department. The 4th year's eligibility will be decided by the head of department upon appointment.

The employment period may be reduced if the candidate has previously been employed in a qualifying post.

About the Research Training

As a PhD Research Fellow, the candidate must participate in an approved educational programme for a PhD degree within a period of 3 years. The deadline for applying for admission to the PhD programme at The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences is 2 months after starting the position or beginning the research project leading to the PhD degree.

The selected candidate will be enrolled in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund and will have access to good welfare benefits.

Application Requirements

  • A brief account of the applicant's research interests and motivation for applying for the position.
  • The names and contact information for two referees, one of whom should be the main advisor for the master's thesis or equivalent thesis.
  • A CV.
  • Transcripts and diplomas showing completion of the bachelor's and master's degrees. If the master's degree has not been completed, a statement from the institution confirming the thesis submission is required.
  • Relevant certificates/references.
  • Approved documentation of proficiency in English (if required for PhD admission).
  • A list of any scientific works (publication list).
