PhD Researcher in Aging Analysis and Reliability of HVDC Cables for Offshore Energy

Position Overview
The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) invites applications for a full-time PhD position focused on high voltage technology, specifically on the aging mechanisms and reliability of extruded High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) cables utilized in offshore energy systems.
This role is part of a dedicated research initiative aimed at advancing the understanding of extruded HVDC cable systems, which present a modern alternative to traditional cable technologies. These systems are pivotal in enhancing cross-border energy transmission, contributing to energy efficiency, and minimizing carbon emissions.
Research Objectives
The selected candidate will investigate critical aspects of HVDC cable longevity, addressing the following research questions:
- What are the primary thermo-electric aging mechanisms affecting polymeric HVDC insulation under direct current stresses?
- How does humidity impact the aging process of polymeric HVDC insulation?
To facilitate this research, the candidate will have access to advanced laboratory facilities, including setups for space charge accumulation measurements, climate-controlled chambers, and high voltage testing equipment.
Key Responsibilities
The PhD candidate will:
- Engage in independent scientific research leading to a doctoral thesis.
- Participate in academic coursework and training, accumulating a minimum of 30 credits.
- Contribute to the dissemination of research findings through publications and presentations at international conferences.
Qualifications
Applicants should possess:
- A relevant academic background in Electric Power Engineering.
- A master's degree equivalent to a five-year Norwegian program, with a strong academic record.
- Proficiency in English, both written and spoken, at a minimum of B2 level.
Preferred Skills
Experience in high voltage insulation techniques, numerical simulations, and programming languages such as Python or MATLAB will be advantageous.
