Trondheim, Trøndelag, Norway Norwegian University of Science and Technology Full time

Position Overview

The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) invites applications for a full-time PhD position focused on high voltage technology, specifically investigating the aging mechanisms and reliability of extruded High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) cables used in offshore energy systems.

About the Role

This PhD role aims to achieve a doctoral degree through rigorous academic training and independent research. The successful candidate will join a dedicated research team within the High Voltage Technology group, contributing to essential advancements in HVDC cable systems.

Extruded HVDC cables represent a modern alternative to traditional cable systems, offering significant advantages such as enhanced conductor temperature tolerance, reduced costs, and expedited installation processes. These cables are vital for facilitating cross-border energy transmission, aligning with global energy efficiency goals and CO2 reduction initiatives. However, the limited long-term operational experience with these systems raises concerns regarding their durability and the effectiveness of condition assessments.

One of the primary challenges in ensuring the reliability of extruded HVDC cables is the absence of established physics-based aging models. While knowledge from AC cable insulation has been developed over decades, applying this to HVDC systems is complex. Understanding the unique thermo-electric aging processes specific to HVDC cables is crucial for predicting their operational lifespan, which can extend beyond 40 years. Additionally, production contaminants and environmental factors, such as humidity, significantly influence the aging and degradation of insulation materials.

As the adoption of extruded HVDC technology increases, there is an urgent need for comprehensive research to fill the existing knowledge gaps and secure the reliability of HVDC infrastructure.

Research Objectives

The PhD candidate will focus on key research questions, including:

  • Identifying the primary thermo-electric aging mechanisms affecting polymeric HVDC insulation under direct current stresses.
  • Examining the impact of humidity on the aging process of polymeric HVDC insulation.

Access to NTNU's high voltage laboratory and SINTEF Energy Lab will be provided, offering state-of-the-art facilities for conducting essential experiments and measurements.

Qualifications

Applicants should possess a relevant background in Electric Power Engineering, with a master's degree or equivalent qualifications. A strong academic record is essential, with a minimum average grade of B or equivalent. Proficiency in English, both written and spoken, is required, with specific language tests to be submitted as proof of competence.

Personal Attributes

The ideal candidate will be inquisitive, self-motivated, and capable of working independently as well as collaboratively. Strong communication skills, creativity in research, and a structured approach to problem-solving are essential qualities.

What We Offer

NTNU provides an inspiring academic environment with exciting research opportunities, supportive colleagues, and competitive employment terms.

Salary and Employment Conditions

The PhD candidate will receive a competitive salary, with contributions to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund. The employment period is set for three years, contingent upon successful admission to the PhD program.
