Trondheim, Trøndelag, Norway Norwegian University of Science and Technology Full time

Position Overview

The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) invites applications for a full-time PhD position focused on high voltage technology, specifically addressing the aging mechanisms and reliability of extruded High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) cables used in offshore energy systems.

About the Role

This role is designed for individuals aiming to complete a doctoral education culminating in a PhD degree. The successful candidate will join the High Voltage Technology research group and contribute to vital research that supports the advancement of HVDC cable systems, which are essential for enhancing cross-border energy transmission and achieving sustainability goals.

Extruded HVDC cables present several advantages over traditional alternatives, including improved thermal performance, cost efficiency, and expedited installation processes. However, their long-term reliability remains uncertain due to limited historical data and the absence of established aging models. Understanding the specific aging mechanisms related to HVDC cables is critical for predicting their operational lifespan, which can exceed 40 years.

Moreover, the impact of production contaminants and environmental factors, such as humidity, on the aging process must be thoroughly investigated. The current reliance on traditional water barriers may not be suitable for modern dynamic cable systems, necessitating innovative solutions that comply with upcoming regulatory changes in the EU.

Research Objectives

The PhD candidate will engage in a research project that aims to:

  • Identify the primary thermo-electric aging mechanisms affecting polymeric HVDC insulation under direct current stresses.
  • Examine how humidity influences the degradation of polymeric HVDC insulation.

Access to NTNU's high voltage laboratory and SINTEF Energy Lab will be provided, including advanced setups for various measurements and national research infrastructure.

Candidate Profile

Applicants should possess a relevant background in Electric Power Engineering, with a master's degree equivalent to a five-year Norwegian program. A strong academic record is essential, with a minimum average grade of B or equivalent. Proficiency in English, both written and spoken, is required, along with the ability to communicate effectively in an academic setting.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in high voltage insulation techniques, aging of polymeric materials, and numerical simulations will be advantageous. Candidates should demonstrate a self-motivated approach to research, creativity, and the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively.

What We Offer

We provide a stimulating and supportive academic environment, opportunities for professional development, and a competitive salary package. The PhD candidate will be integrated into a dedicated team focused on innovative research in offshore energy systems.

Application Process

Interested candidates are encouraged to submit their applications, highlighting their qualifications and research interests. The selection process will assess both academic credentials and personal attributes suitable for a successful research career.
