Oslo, Oslo County, Norway University of Oslo Full time

The University of Oslo is seeking a highly motivated and skilled PhD Research Fellow to join the ERC research project UNRULY. As a key member of the team, you will contribute to understanding uncertainty related to hydropower projects in the face of climate change.

About the Project

UNRULY aims to explore how entangled social, political, and environmental processes shape change. We are interested in non-linear processes of change that existing models do not factor in, which creates more uncertainty when trying to manage the future.

We build on theoretical advances in geography, science and technology studies (STS), feminist theory, socio-environmental systems, and cognate disciplines to reframe ontologies of 'environment' and 'society'. Our approach will experiment with acoustic methods, embodied methods, story-telling, and stochastic mathematics to think through how uncertainty shapes energy justice concerns and outcomes of renewable energy projects.

This project offers a unique opportunity to co-create new insights with local people working on the ground in Nepal and Sub-Saharan Africa. You will be part of an ambitious, anti-colonial project that seeks to challenge existing research conventions and reimagine novel approaches to our shared planetary crisis.

Your Responsibilities
  • Conduct original research on uncertainty related to hydropower projects in the face of climate change.
  • Develop and implement methodological approaches that take conceptual insights seriously.
  • Collaborate with local stakeholders in Nepal and Sub-Saharan Africa to co-create new insights.
  • Publish research findings in top-tier academic journals.
About Us

The Department of Sociology and Human Geography at the University of Oslo is committed to advancing knowledge in the field of human geography. We offer a dynamic and supportive research environment that encourages collaboration and innovation.
