About the role

We're seeking a talented Senior Data Engineer to join our Platform engineering team. In this role, you will take ownership of our data environment, encompassing data pipelines, data modeling, and quality monitoring. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to ensure that all stakeholders have access to high-quality, relevant data for informed decision-making.

As a Senior Data Engineer at Spond, you will optimize and scale our data operations. Your work will ensure we make informed product and business decisions based on data and insights, enabling us to deliver a top-tier sports events organization to millions of users worldwide.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain data pipelines, as well as own the entire lifecycle of data ingestion and transformation, leveraging AWS Glue, Fivetran, Databricks, dbt and Python / PySpark solutions.

  • Apply CI/CD and test automation to new and existing data pipeline workflows.

  • Design and maintain robust data models that adhere to best practices, ensuring our datasets are efficient, scalable, and ready for analytical and operational use.

  • Work with cross-functional teams with product, engineering and BI to gather requirements and deliver data-driven solutions aligned with business objectives.

  • Implement and maintain mechanisms to guarantee data accuracy, consistency, and reliability across our data ecosystem.

  • Continuously evaluate and optimize data workflows for cost, speed, and scalability in a cloud-based environment.

  • Champion and promote the best developer experience in coding, documentation and testing.

  • Provide clean, curated data sets for analytics and other data-driven initiatives, ensuring teams can easily access the insights they need.

  • Handle on-demand data analyses, explorations, and other tasks that arise in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.

Qualifications

  • 3–5+ years of experience in data engineering and data modeling.

  • Solid understanding of complex SQL queries, performance optimization, and relational database concepts.

  • Experience with Python/PySpark and proven ability to develop and maintain ETL jobs, transformations, and scripts.

  • Familiarity with dbt and Databricks for building, testing, and deploying data pipelines.

  • Experience with developing and deploying on AWS (such as AWS Glue).

  • Familiarity with CircleCI or other CI/CD tools is a plus.

  • Experience with data orchestration tools like Apache Airflow or Dagster as a plus.

  • Fluency in English (both written and spoken).

  • Perform a holistic review of the existing data platform to define and gradually deliver architecture that best caters to Spond needs.

  • Optimize data extraction and ingestion processes for costs, reliability and extensibility.

  • Define, develop and deliver core datasets used for downstream analytics with strong requirements on immutability, GDPR, and data quality.

  • Design and implement historical data tracking capabilities, capture and analyze temporal changes in key metrics, such as group size evolution, enabling trend analysis and historical pattern recognition.
